Explanatory Note to the Artist

This is a collaborative piece I worked on with Tiffany Sevilla, a composer based in Chicago. I did the animation to go with her music.

It will be performed Saturday at Columbia College, Chicago.

The piece is based on a freelance job I had some years back, in which I was sent a document titled "Explanatory Note to the Artist." She was impressed with the document's art direction and put it to music.

Eric Joyner at McCaig Welles Gallery, Brooklyn

I wanted to alert those of you in NY that artist Eric Joyner will be showing his continuing saga of the robot donut wars at McCaig Welles Gallery, Brooklyn. While Obama may be the new President of this country, Joyner has been the president of the galactic donut council for nearly a decade now. His work will make you chuckle and cry. Relative Connections at the DeYoung Museum

This September Laura Parker and I presented Relative Connections at the DeYoung Museum's Kimball Gallery. This was an interactive project aimed at cataloging our oral histories - both real and imagined.

Mission Open Studios

I will be participating in the Mission Open Studios this weekend.

When: April 26th and 27th, 11am to 6pm. There will also be a Friday night reception, April 25th from 6 to 9pm.

Location: 1890 Bryant Street #212 @ Mariposa. Many art studios in the area will be open for the event.

Also during the Mission Open Studios I will be showing a number of drawings from my sketchbooks at A.Mus Gallery, at 614 Alabama Street. They are a bit on the dark and whimsical side. Please stop by and take a look.

Southern Exposure's Monster Draw covered by Artbusiness.com

Southern Exposure’s 8th Annual Monster Drawing Rally

It looked kind of fun last year, so I signed up!

Monster Draw is Friday, February 22nd from 6:00 – 11:00 pm at the Verdi Club (2424 Mariposa @ Potrero).
I am scheduled to draw from 7:00 - 8:00 pm.

I will be drawing several pieces for sale at the event. All proceeds support Southern Exposure's Exhibitions and Artists in Education Program.

ADDENDUM:
It was a bit nerve racking drawing with such a large crowd around. But I was able to finish 2 pen and inks of some odd looking characters. One with balloons and another flanked by some crazy animated dogs. Sorry, no time for pics.

DeYoung Museum residency

Artist Laura Parker and I are happy to announce that we have received the residency at the DeYoung Museum for our collaborative project, "Relative Connections." We will be presenting it at the DeYoung Museum's Kimbal Gallery this Summer. Laura and I were awarded a San Francisco Arts Commission Individual Artists Grant to help make this project possible.

George Sugarman Foundation Grant

I am pleased to announce that I am the recipient of a George Sugarman Foundation Grant.

George Sugarman (1912-1999), was a prolific, controversial, and forward-thinking American artist. His sculptures, drawings, and paintings defy a definitive style. As an innovator in pedestal-free sculpture and vividly painted metal sculptures, Sugarman was continually expanding on the metamorphoses of his prodigious creativity.

Always interested in the well-being of dedicated, young, and developing artists, Sugarman provided for them in his will. Thus, the establishment of The George Sugarman Foundation, Inc.

The Cabinet of Dr. Lapin

Tuesday October 30th, Laura Parker and I hosted the Cabinet of Dr. Lapin, a lecture by Dr. Daniel Lapin on horror art. Dr. Lapin is the author of The Vampire, Dracula and Incest. In his own words...

"The horror myth, and the vast body of literature, art and films that embody it, is a collectively shared nightmare. Everyone knows it's a meaningful nightmare -- and a multi-billion dollar industry -- but how shall we interpret this dream?"

Dr. Lapin's lecture explored horror films and books, examining the unconscious motivations of the authors, and subsequently the overall place and function of the genre as it relates to art and society. Despite the evenings interruption by an earthquake, we had a larger than expected turn out for this event, one of several we will be hosting over the coming months.

San Francisco Mayor's Art Award

Monday was the Mayor's Art Award, honoring the lifetime achievements of Ruth Asawa, both in the arts and in public service. It was also to celebrate the San Francisco Arts Commission's Artist and Art Organization Awardees in 2006 - 2007. Laura Parker and myself received an award for our collaborative project Relative Connections.

Speakers included: Nancy Gonchar, Interim Director of Cultural Affairs; Maya Draisin, Arts Commission; California State Assemblymember Mark Leno; Supervisor Tom Ammiano; and, of course, Mayor Gavin Newsom presenting the award to Ruth Asawa.

But no time to shake hands with everyone, it was off to Bollywood 9, a charity bowling event against breast cancer, err, with saris. While I may never make it on the green, I discovered I've got potential as a bowler!
